Carolyn Woods
Children’s
National Medical Center will truly miss Carolyn Woods a thirty
three (33) year employee. Carolyn is one of Gods faithful servants
that he placed in this hospital to touch the lives of so many people
in so many different ways. Carolyn started her employment at the old
Children’s Hospital on 13th street in April 1974. There she worked
as a unit clerk. Her drive toward excellence, dress for success and
calm demeanor made coming to work a joy for everyone around her.
When Children’s moved it’s location to 111 Michigan Ave Carolyn
moved also taking her skill set as an example to the new crew of
unit clerks at this new facility.

Marshall Jackson
Hello
everyone, my name is Marshall Jackson. I’m the editor of your
newsletter. I’ve been an employee in the emergency room at
Children’s National Medical Center for 19 yrs. I’m currently serving
my 4th term on the Local 722 Executive Board. I volunteered to be
the editor of the “Bottomline” in 2002. Under my leadership your
newsletter has evolved from a 1 page black and white flyer to become
an 8 page color newsletter. I’d like to thank those of you who has
encouraged me with your suggestion, comments and concerns. I have
welcomed them in the past and will continue to welcome them as long
as I am editor.
My goal is to keep the membership informed. Informed of as many
issues as I can that will affect the lives of the SEIU Local 722
membership. These issues may be pay raises, contract language,
scholarship information, politics, social events, parking problems,
construction, or many, many more things that I did not list. My goal
is not to offend anyone. I may share some spiritual things as well
as some funny things, some health awareness things as well as some
economic justice things. I may talk about SEIU Local 722 or I may
talk about CWA, UAW, AFL-CIO or Justice for Janitors. The goal is to
share information that is useful to the workers of SEIU Local 722. I
realize that not every article is meant for everyone, but I try to
make sure that there is an article for everyone. If I am missing the
mark please contact me and let me know. If I am doing a good job
please let me know that also.
I am always looking for articles from the membership as well as
looking for assistance in keeping the newsletter going. Anyone who
has a desire to assist me don’t hesitate to contact me. My contact

Linda Hagans

My name is Linda Hagans. I have been an employee at the
Washington Hospital Center for 20+ yrs. I’d like to share with the
membership my experience of participation in the SEIU AFRAM
Conference in Las Vegas. Although it was my first time participating
in an AFRAM event, no one knew it. Everyone treated me as though I’d
been a participant for a long time. The conference was wonderful.
There was a lot of information sharing. The Guest speakers opened my
eyes to the many things that are happening not just in our union,
but also around the country. We always hear our union officials say
that things that we achieve here at WHC affect workers in other
locations. We never really understand that until we are networking
with workers that do the same work that we do but with a different
employer. You never really know how good or bad you have things
until you compare it to someone else.
It was absolutely wonderful to see so many of our people from all
over the country coming together in unity. Bettering the standard of
living for workers across America is such a positive experience. Our
own Marchel Smiley was leading the cause. Seeing first hand the
effort he has put in across the country makes me proud to even know
him. Many of us take for granted the work that the union does, but I
am a witness that the work being done here is shining in the north,
south, east and west. There were union members from all of those
areas present in support of Mr. Smiley and the hard work that he has
been doing for everyone.
This was my first time visiting Las Vegas so I had fun. But, more
important, this was my eye opening experience that led me to not
only write this article, but to encourage others to get involved
with this organization. Your participation will not only assist you,
but it will assist other workers as well. You may not think that you
or your feelings, thoughts, or ideas are important. I can honestly
say that this organization will make you feel like all of your input
is important. This was a first class conference from a first class
organization. I really enjoyed myself here and I look forward to
many more experiences with AFRAM |
Gloria Bryant
Meet
Gloria Bryant. Gloria is an employee at Children’s National Medical
Center. Many of you have seen Gloria over the years. She has been
employed at Children’s for twenty - six years. Gloria started her
employment in the Nutritional Service department where she served
the hospital very well for twenty - three years. Gloria decided she
was ready for a change so she moved to the Pre-Operative Anesthesia
Care Unit (PACU), where she has been for the last three years.
Over the years Gloria has seen many things change at Children’s. She
has seen several CEO’s of the hospital, several different companies
running the Nutritional Services department, many changing faces in
the HR department, as well as many new local 722 members. She has
even seen some staff leave the hospital and return several years
later. Some left complaining and others left happy, but all in all
they returned.
Gloria became an active member of Local 722 back in 1980 as a result
of her meeting Pat Ferguson and Marchel Smiley who are very wise,
understanding, out-spoken union representatives who promote justice
and equality. Pat encouraged Gloria to become a shop steward, learn
as much as she can about unionism, but most important stay involved.
As a result Gloria has been a very active shop steward, elected to
the executive board and is also a member of the activities
committee.
Gloria has had to deal with issues and concerns of many union
members as well as managers at Children’s. In Gloria’s shop steward
role she has noted that lack of communication and understanding is
what contributes to most issues. She receives great joy in seeing a
smile on faces of members after helping to resolve their issues. She
knows that she won’t win every case presented before her, but she is
always trying to help as many members as possible.
Gloria encourages all members of Local 722, especially those at
Children’s, to get involved, learn as much about the union as you
can, participate in the many activities that the union is involved
in. There is something for everyone. Some things are political, some
are spiritual, some involve community service, and some are just
plain old fun. Gloria has noticed that there is always more
participation by union members at Washington Hospital Center than
there is from Children’s.
For the Children’s members that complain to each other or don’t say
anything we encourage you to become involved and let your voices be
heard in a positive way. The union can only grow with your
participation.
Gloria thanks God, her mother, Pat Ferguson and Marchel Smiley for
being great counsels in her life.
